is it possible to sit in a cockpit forward of the plough in skirt or does it have to be placed aft of the skirt

Where on the plans is the 'plough in skirt?' ;)
IF you're talking about the partition skirt, the helm is usually directly overhead to slightly forward, with the pilot seating position just slightly behind.

...edited this to spell "helm" correctly!!

On a larger craft the pilot can sit farther forward than the stock helm, but not all your friends too.
